1 review for ViaTerra Saddlebag Stay (RE Thunderbird)

Very underwhelming. I only bought it because it looked like an OK solution akin to what I had been planning to get fabricated for a long time. Even after the price was arbitrarily raised from 750 to 1000 when it came back in stock (and 999 as I write this; what’s up with that!).

Anyway, even with the incorrect pricing, I would’ve been happy it had been worth it but my first impression was, “Did I pay a thousand bucks for this thin piece of metal?” Moreover, the fitment was not as easy as they show in the video (on ViaTerra’s Youtube channel). It conveniently does not feature the tie-down loop that comes stock above the rear-right shock-absorber on the Thunderbird. This stay and and that loop don’t seem to fit together very easily. I just left it on since taking it out and putting it back in before a trip will waste my time.

This flimsiness came to the fore when I used it on a long-ish (1500+ km) trip. Every day before starting, I had to pull it out, away from the suspension. It tends to bend in towards the tyre over the course of the day and it’s very easy to see why (the design). Very disappointed.

I would advise potential buyers to only buy it if they absolutely cannot go to a local guy and get a better one made (and with a better design) for less.

We get the stay laser cut, and CNC bent. Laser cutting and CNC bending are significantly more expensive than the local fabricator who does these operations by hand. But this ensures each piece is exactly the same as any other from the lot.
Also, we included a longer bolt along with washers to accommodate the change in level at the rear anchoring part – without the use of washers, the stay would bend inward and also get deformed at this spot.

We fitted the stay on a TB with the side grab handle and had no problem fitting it. You need not remove that grab handle for using the stay. We have sent the pictures to your email id for your reference. The stay is designed to be about 10mm clear from the suspension and that clearance is maintained along the length. At the rear, we had increased the length of the horizontal part from the earlier design so that the stay is flush with the edge of the rear grab rail. The thickness of the material used is 3mm, and yes, it does deform when you apply force on it. The purpose of the stay is to keep the saddlebags away from the rear tyre, and is not designed to test strength.

We believe in our product, and the utility it offers. If you feel otherwise, and would like to return the product, we are more than happy to reimburse the amount that you have paid for the stay. Do drop us an email at, and we will help get this sorted.
